Pennsylvania School System (PSSA) Exam
The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) is a test of high standards administered to elementary and high school students in Pennsylvania in grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11. Usually, they are assessed in reading skills, and mathematics, with grade 5, 8, and 11 students assessed in writing skills also. Natural science skills and those relating to data interpretation and analysis are to be added to the existing test skills.
Test scores are according to 4 levels, set out by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The four levels are, the advanced level which indicates superior academic performance, the Proficient level which indicates satisfactory academic performance and the Basic level which reflects marginal performance.
The fourth level is Below Basic which indicates inadequate academic performance. It shows little understanding and a minimal skill display.
Teachers use the individual scores of the students to identify students who fall below State and National standards. The scores also provide schools and districts with information used for planning curriculum.
