Georgia High School Graduation Test GHSGT Exam Info


The Georgia High School Graduation Test must be taken by all high school students in Georgia to qualify for their high school diploma. The exam is first given in the 11th grade. If a student fails to pass any of the five parts of GHSGT, there are still four opportunities for them to take the test before the end of graduating year. The five test areas are in English, writing, science, social studies and math.

The writing section of GHSGT involves writing an essay. Students write on an assigned topic and are scored based on content, arguments, proper arrangement of thoughts, grammar, sentence structure, style and vocabulary. The GHSGT English section consist of three main parts which includes familiarity with certain literature as well as ability to read and comprehend; critical and logical thinking, fact vs. opinion, inference drawing, and grammatical writing.

The math section covers questions on basic high school math, data measurement and analysis, algebra and geometry. The science section of GHSGT focuses on three main areas, biology, physical science and research skills. The social studies section covers US history, geography, civics and world history.

The GHSGT questions are multiple-choice format except for the essay question. The essay section is graded in a different way from the other sections. However, a minimum score of 500 is needed to pass any section of the test. To be specific, the English section requires a minimum score of 500 to achieve a pass and 538 to achieve a Pass Plus; for math, it is a 500 to pass and 535 for a Pass plus. Social studies require 500 for a pass and 531 to get a Pass Plus. For science, it is 500 marks to pass and 526 for a Pass Plus. Pass Plus is reflected on the issued diploma to show that the student achieved distinction that is beyond the basic pass requirement.
