Indiana Graduation Qualifying Exam - GQE

The Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) is a test that high school students in Indiana must pass to earn their high school diploma. The test, which is in line with the state’s standard of education, measures skills and knowledge that the student has acquired to determine if they are ready to face the outside world with a high school diploma.

The GQE test usually comes up towards the end of the year and students are eligible to take the test for the first time in their second year of high school. If the student fails to pass GQE at this first attempt, they would still have at least four more chances to retake and pass the test (March and September of junior and senior school years). The test has two main parts, which are test of English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. If a student passes one part of the test and fails the other, he or she only have to retake the failed section until successfully passed.

The test is taken over a three day period, and student candidates are expected to be present for all three days. The total time allotted for the entire three-day test is six hours. The math section of the test covers basic high school math through grade 8. Questions are drawn from topics such as basic algebra, geometry and simple data analysis. The English/language arts section test the student’s knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary skills including questions based on literary texts. The ELA section covers through grade 9.

The GQE test makes special consideration and accommodations for students with special needs such as disabilities or students with very limited knowledge of English. Considerations that applied in such circumstances include allotting extra time for test sessions and altering the test scheduling, setting and format to suit individual needs
