High School Placement Test (HSPT)

The High School Placement Test is a standardized test that is used by some private and Catholic high schools to screen and classify incoming students. The test is usually held at the private school requiring it. Not all private or Catholic high schools require prospective students to take the HSPT but if required, the school provides information as to the exact date, time and fees.

HSPT is broken down to five sections consisting of verbal skills, mathematics, language, quantitative skills and reading. The entire time allotted for the five HSPT sections is a little over two and a half hours with a total of about 280 questions in multiple-choice format. The verbal skill section consist of 60 questions with the allotted time being 16 minutes, 52 quantitative skills questions are for 30 minutes, 62 questions in the reading section for 25 minutes while mathematics last for 45 minutes and has 64 questions. The language section has 60 questions and last for 25 minutes. 

The grading scheme used in HSPT does not penalize students for wrongs answers and so it is better to guess that to leave a question blank. HSPT scores range between a low score of 200 and a high score of 800. The minimum score that signifies a pass is dependent on the high school of choice. Each sets its own acceptable minimum requirement. It is possible to send a student’s scores to various high schools to improve chances of getting placement in a high school.
