Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP)
The Michigan Educational Assessment Program is a standardized test for all public school students in Michigan from elementary school, middle to junior high school. In 2007, public high school students stopped taking the MEAP and the test was replaced with the Michigan Merit Exam. The MEAP test is thus now for all students in public school up to the junior high school level.
The MEAP test was started back in 1970 to assess student’s knowledge and educational progress in relation to the pre set educational standards of the board of education for the State. Outstanding students who score very high (3.5) are awarded the Michigan Merit award and a college scholarship worth $2,500. To receive the scholarship however, students are expected to undergo 40 hours of community service. Recently, the Michigan Attorney General, Michael Cox declared the mandatory community service requirement to be unconstitutional.
The MEAP test is not mandatory for private school students in the state but public school students are expected to take and pass the test to be eligible to graduate. The test covers basic areas related to the student’s education with emphasis on math, English, reading and the sciences.
