Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT)

What is the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT)

Ohio Graduation Test was formed in 2002, but the first official test was given in the Fall of 2004. The test was used to replace the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency test (NGPT). The OGT is the educational standard test in the state of Ohio and high school students have to pass all parts of the test to be eligible to graduate. The test is first taken in the month of March during their sophomore year in high school. If students fail to pass the exam in their first attempt they are given six more chances to do so. The six opportunities include an optional extra summer to take the exam. The test has recently come under criticism for allegedly being unfair to children from average income families. It however remains the accepted educational standard in Ohio.

OGT comprises of test in five academic sections, math, reading, writing, science and social studies. The OGT exam is part of the No Child Left Behind program in Ohio, which stipulates annual testing in reading and mathematics. OGT employs a very high level of security enforced by schools and the board of education. Access to test materials is highly restricted from students taking the test.

The test has a number of different types of questions.  Most are multiple choice, some questions requiring short written answers each scoring two points, and some questions requiring longer answers that score four points each. Apart from the writing portion, the others sections have 44 items including some field questions, which are not a part of the student’s actual total score. The writing section has two essays and some multiple-choice questions. Special calculators are provided for the math section. Each section is allotted two and a half hours to complete. Under the IEP, 504 plan some special students with LEP status could be granted additional time.

The OGT has 5 sections, Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies.
