Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)

What is the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)

TAKS, also known as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills is an assessment test given to Texan students in public primary and secondary schools. As the name suggests, the TAKS test is used to assess student’s knowledge and skills acquired in reading, math, social studies, writing and science in accordance with the Texas educational standards.. The TAKS test replaced the Texas Assessment of academic Skills (TAAS) test in 2003. The TAKS test does not apply to students in private or home schools, as they are exempt from the test.

All students must pass TAKS test in English (ELA), science, math and social studies before they can graduate from a public high school in Texas. Students in junior and senior high school have five opportunities to take and pass the test.

The subjects vary according to the grade, however math and reading are always a part of the test. The various sections of the test all have multiple-choice questions while the reading and ELA test for high school students have a section requiring short answers. There is also a composition to be written under the English/language arts (ELA) and writing section. High school students in grade nine and eleven are permitted to use a dictionary and/or thesaurus while students taking high school science and math are allowed to use calculators and formula charts. A test score of 2100 is required to make minimum pass level while a score of 2400 earns a student a “Commended” status.

The TAKS test are not timed and students are allowed as much time as they require. The grading system employed by TAKS administrators is unique. Multiple-choice sections are scored and graded by computer. Graders in Austin, Albuquerque and Dallas score essays and other sections requiring short written answers. Graders used are not necessary all teachers but are mandated to have at least a bachelor’s degree and preferably some educational experience.
