Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)

The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) covers four subjects: reading, mathematics, science, and writing.  The WASL has four different types of questions, multiple-choice, short-answer, essay, and problem solving.  Third to tenth grade students write this exam, though it is not required in the ninth grade. Third & sixth grade students are tested in reading and math; fourth and seventh grade students in math, reading and writing, and fifth and eighth grader students are tested in reading and science.

In Addition, assessments are made in social studies (civics, history, geography, and economics), arts and health and fitness which are mandatory at all the elementary, middle and high school grade levels. Individual School districts establish the testing schedule for their students, usually between the last week of April through the first week of May.

The Washington state teachers and education specialists developed a specific scoring criteria for each subject tested. These criteria are used by specially trained experts to score each student's work. For every ten tests one is reviewed by additional scorers to make sure grading is consistent.
The state tests are not deigned to be a grading tool. The main purpose of it is to measure where students are learning and to help teachers improve instruction the needed areas of assistance.
