NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR INTERIOR DESIGN QUALIFICATION (NCIDQ) Certification

The NCIDQ exam is required for interior design professionals to measure their competence in all the areas of interior design, and to incorporate, ethics, design safety, exceptional skills, as well as other qualities into their practice. 

Registration deadlines are posted on the NCIDQ website, and usually begin in early-mid July for the fall examinations and early-mid January fort the spring examinations. Applications can be made for one exam time at a time only.

The exam covers six areas: Programming, Schematic Designs, Design Development, and Contract Documents, Contract Administration, Professional Practice.

The exam consist of two multiple choice sections and a practical section. The first section is made up of 100 scored questions and 25 experimental questions titled principles and practice of interior design. The second section is a 125 multiple choice questions on contract documents and administration.  Section 3 covers schematics and Design development (a 7-hour practicum session of 2 parts). The exam is offered in paper and pencil format only.

arrowFees for the NCIDQ examinations are:   

  • $150 for online registration
  • $250 for a regular paper registration within the deadline
  • $350 for late deadline paper registration.

Upon approval of application, fees are paid for each section of the exam.

Total Fees $750

Per Section Fee: 

  • Section I   $240
  • Section II  $200
  • Section III $375
Failure of the exam requires a new registration and payment of fees.
The exam is offered in more than 50 locations across the USA and Canada. Examination centers for upcoming exams are published in the NCDIQ’s website: www.ncidq.org.
