The Certified Wound Care Specialist (CWS) Exam is managed and conducted by The American Academy of Wound Management (AAWM).
Wound Care Certifications
There are a number of different certifications and levels of certification.
Certified Wound Care Associate (CWCA)
Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB)
Wound Care Certification (WCC)
Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN) This is the most general and includes:
Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN), Certified Ostomy Care Nurse (COCN), Certified Continence Care Nurse (CCCN), Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON), and Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (CWOCN) Exams
You must have a BA degree or higher in a field related to life sciences.
You must have at least 3 years of clinical wound care experience
You must be in one of the following designated professions
MD, DO, DPM, RN, PA, PT, OT, DMD, VMD
Download and print an application form from http://www.aawm.org/documents/CWSApplication020409.pdf
Attach a professional resume, 3 letters of reference, a detailed description of your professional experience and copies of professional licenses, board certifications and transcripts of your highest degree to the exam application.
Complete the Testing Center application form, payment form and mail it with the Testing Center application form, required supporting documents as well as the payment to AAWM. Ensure that all the application materials are in the same envelope.
If you are eligible, you will receive an Eligibility Notice about 6 weeks before the first day of the testing window.
Call to schedule your examination appointment as instructed in the Eligibility Notice.
This is a computer-based examination.
There are up to 200 multiple-choice questions.
You have 3 hours to complete the exam.
Results will be sent to you by mail within 4 to 6 weeks.
