International Board Certified Lactation Consultants Exam (IBLCE) Test Preparation & Study Guide
Conducted by the International Board of Lactation Consultants examiners (IBLCE), the exam is to induct new consultants into membership of the International Board of Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). THE IBLCE is a body of professionals who specialize in clinical management of breastfeeding and have demonstrated their competence by passing the international cross-reference examination. To provide breast feeding assistant to women and children, the IBCLC also work with health teams to help solve breast feeding problems.
Test Preparation
To prepare for this test, several years may be required, depending on the candidate’s educational experience and background. A background in anatomy and physiology, sociology and cultural diversity, psychology, counseling or communication skills, nutrition, and medical terminology is essential for this certification.
Format
The IBLCE exam for lactation consultants is made up of 200 multiple choice questions. 125 of these are cognitive, based on words and scenarios, and 75 are based on photographs. The questions are designed to test the applicant's in-depth knowledge, rather than simply the recall of facts. The exam is designed to assess the decision making skills.
The exam is administered on the last Monday of July of every year in various locations around the world. The exam comes in two sessions of 100 questions each. A higher score on one exam can make up for a lower score in the other.
