The Legal Nurse Consultant Certification exam is held at 47 testing sites around the USA. It is offered twice a year, one during the spring and once in the fall.

The required fee for the exam is $275 for American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board members and a sum of $375 for non-members.

The exam is made up of 200 multiple-choice questions. The time limit for this exam is 4 hours. The questions on the exam relate to gathering and analyzing legal data, specific information regarding the legal process and specific legal issues and legal mandates.  In addition, there are questions on specific fields of law, such as personal injury, medical malpractice or negligence, and risk management.
The Legal Nurse Consultant Certification is valid for a 5 year period. At the expiration of that period, the licensed RN who has been employed as a legal nurse consultant for at least 2,000 hours in the last 5 years is due for re certification. In addition, at least 60 continuing education hours must be completed.
