Preparing for a Math Test

September 20th, 2008

Even if you find math to be your best subject, taking a math test can be a difficult process. Sometimes math calculations can take considerable amounts of time and if not done correctly will give you the wrong answer. Preparing for a math test can be difficult because you need to learn formulas and math processes but if you approach your preparations methodically, you can prepare for your math test and do well.

Start preparing for your math test by determining what concepts will be on your test. Math tests are sometimes easier than other tests because the teacher will test you on concepts laid out in class and in the text book. You can use this knowledge to help you refine your study plan and guide you through your study sessions.

Many people find the need to memorize formulas and processes difficult. Utilize your learning style to focus your energy and help you learn the necessary formulas quickly. You may find it helpful to write out the formulas repeatedly, make flash cards to quiz yourself with, or repeat the formulas out loud. Some people use a combination of all three methods in order to learn the formulas necessary to succeed on their math test.

Complete several practice problems for each type of problem you will be tested on. Make sure you lay out the problems in an organized manner and check your answers to confirm you have the correct answer. Practice until you are able to complete the problems quickly and correctly.
Finally, the night before the test make sure you get enough sleep. The night before your math test is not the time to spend all night studying and preparing for the test. Get a good night’s sleep and you will be able to recall more of information that you have learned. Math tests can be easy if you study the appropriate concepts and practice until you feel confident.

How to Study for the SAT

September 15th, 2008

Are you currently applying for college and worried that the score you receive on the SAT test can mean the difference between attending the college of your dreams or having to attend a university you really do not like? You should start studying for the SAT as early as possible and study on a consistent basis. Practice the skills the SAT will be testing you on as often as you can and you will find yourself receiving a high score on the test.

Take a trip to a local book store and pick up a comprehensive SAT study guide. A good SAT study guide will give you not only practice tests and helpful hints but explain to you the process of the test. The SAT has specific scoring rules and if you start guessing at the answers you could actually loose points on the test. Make sure you spend the time necessary to understand the process and the scoring guidelines of the SAT and incorporate this learning into your practice sessions and your test taking.

Once you understand the SAT test taking process, take a practice test. Take the test as you will be taking the SAT, timed your sections and score the test correctly. This will help you to understand what areas you need to study and practice on while preparing for the SAT. You may do really well at answering the questions but find that the time allotment is difficult to adhere too. Use your study sessions to concentrate on the areas of the test you seem to do poorly in.

Studying for the SAT involves more than learning facts and figures, you need to practice your test taking and time management skills. Do not spend so much time trying to learn every word in the dictionary or every complex math equation ever published. Instead spend your practice and study sessions learning test taking skills and you will find yourself scoring much higher on the SAT than you ever imagined.

How to Study for the ACT

September 10th, 2008

High School students often feel a lot of pressure to do well on the standardized college admissions test. The pressure to do well on these tests often lead students to burn out on studying and can cause considerable test anxiety. Studying for the ACT is a simple process if you break the project down and spread your study sessions out over many days or weeks.
You may find it very helpful to purchase a ACT preparation book. Many of these books not only have detailed descriptions of the test processing and helpful tips for preparing but you can find practice tests as well. Many times we become apprehensive about taking a standardized test because we do not understand the process that will be used on the day of the test. Reading a ACT test preparation book may help alleviate much of this stress and help you relax when you take the ACT.

When preparing for the ACT you should start early. Begin studying by taking a practice exam available in a quality ACT preparation book. After you have completed the practice test you will be able to see the areas of the test that you will do well on and also the areas of the areas you need to practice for. Taking the ACT is not a test you actually study facts and figures for instead it is a test that you need to understand the process and practice.

Depending on the amount of time you have before your taking the ACT you should either practice daily or weekly. Do not allow yourself to skip practice sessions or expend your sessions beyond a week apart. If you procrastinate and put off your practice sessions for too long, you take the chance that everything you practice and learn will be forgotten between sessions.
Studying for the ACT is not difficult as long as you concentrate on the areas of the test that you do poorly in and practice the skills the test is measuring. A good ACT preparation book will help you focus on the skills you need to practice and explain what is being measured by each section of the test.
