What is the different between the AFQT and ASVAB?

Actually there is only 1 Exam - the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) which has 10 tests.

Four of these tests, Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Math Knowledge (MK) — give you the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score.

The other test is the ASVAB are, Electronics, Mechanical, Auto and Shop and Assembling.

Can I choose a paper and Pencil version of the AFQT if I don't want to take the computer version.

Yes. You can choose either one. The computer version, or CAT-ASVAB is sometimes thought to be harder than the paper version, or P&P version but this is a myth.

Some of the confusion comes from the computer version being 'adaptive.' If you are above average ability, you will tend to get some harder questions and if you are below average ability, you will get easier questions. This won't affect your mark and isn't something to be afraid of or concerned about, and you will receive the same mark whichever format you choose.

could you pass your asvab if you do good on the word knowledge and paragraph and ok on the math sections

Good Question - It depends on HOW GOOD you are on the Word Knowledge and Paragraph and what OK means. Try a AFQT practice test like this one, and you can get a better idea.

That is a good strategy though.
