Studying For Problem Based Exams
Problem based examinations might be considered easier to study for than others because there is often a formula or an application of theory that is required that can be learned although textbook problems can often seem completely different than those that are on an exam. That’s probably why they call it a test!
These types of questions are usually found in engineering, statistics or mathematics, chemistry and other science related studies. The HSPT and other Catholic School Entrance Tests usually have this type of question. Questions are posed that require you to have knowledge of the formulas and theories used to solve the problems. That is why with these types of questions you are able to learn the equations and/or formulas by heart and apply them to the question. With scientific theories there could be more ways to answer it but part of your answer will be explaining your reasoning. See our post on answering different types of questions.
The key to problem based questions is to read the instructions carefully to ensure you have all the specific details of a particular scenario so that you can interpret the question correctly and determine your procedure on answering the question. More on Following Instructions. With some of these types of questions, there is a series of events or processes that have to be taken to arrive at the correct answer. Your ability to clearly outline this and come up with the solution is all part of this type of question.
Interpretation of the question is essential but as with all tests it is important not to rush yourself while taking the exam because often you miss something important that might invalidate your answer – so take your time and if you have a problem with a question, you should skip it and return to it later. Don’t waste too much time on any question if you are hung up because you might not finish the test otherwise.

In past experiences I have had a considerable easier time taking problem solving exams, but I had a lot of trouble actually figuring out the the formulas used in order to actually solve the problems. That was the hardest part because it took me longer to actually study for these test. The tests that I were taking were for my engineer class which had a lot of geomotry and math involved in the class. I did research and found some helpful steps that helped me push through the pain and agony of studying for these test. One of the biggest tips is that you actually have to read the instructions carefully in order to understand what it takes to solve the problem. I learned that paying more attention to the instructions actually made to problem easier to solve. If you have great attention to detail, then it will make it easier for you. Don’t get to far ahead of yourself and make sure you are interpreting the questions that are being asked. I have had test that I thought I was doing good and getting it done fast but ended up messing up because I wasn’t reading the questions right.
