Need Help Studying for the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE)?
The American Board for Certification of Teachers Excellence handles and awards the Certification for the Exceptional Teacher. The Board is a non-profit organization devoted to certifying, recruiting, supporting and preparing teachers.
The Board (ABCTE) was founded in 2001 as a government grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Its aim is to support teachers, and aspiring teachers through regular classroom coaching. It is also a program designed to inspire career changes to enter teaching and give them an efficient process to achieve their goal.

Interested candidates must have the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an approved college or university
- Pass a background check.
- Pass the ABCTE Professional Teaching Knowledge exam.
- Pass the ABCTE subject area exam (in the specific candidate’s chosen subject area).

The exam is consists of the following:
Professional Teaching Knowledge Exam
- Computer-based exam.
- 100 multiple-choice questions and a writing component.
- Applicants have two and one half (2.5) hours to complete the exam
Multiple Subject Exam
- Computer based exam.
- 150 multiple-choice questions
- Candidates have four (4) hours to complete exam.
English Language Arts
- A computer based exam.
- Consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and writing component
- Applicants have three (3) hours to finish the exam
All other Subject Area Exams ( Mathematics, Biology, General Science, Chemistry, Physics, Special Education, US History, World History and Reading)
- A computer based exam.
- Contains 125 multiple-choice questions
- Candidates have four (4) hours to finish the test.
