• Eligibility for the MTEL exams depends on the level and category of the teacher and educator and the type of license. For full details, visit MTEL licensure requirements

• The MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills exam is made up of two subtest, reading and writing. The two subtests contain multiple-choice questions and two open-resource exercises in summary and composition
• The Academic (PreK–12) subject matter exams is made up of two subtests, the mathematics subtest and the multi-subject subtest comprising history, language arts, social science, technology and engineering. The subtests are made up of multiple-choice questions and open-response items
• The MTEL Vocational Technical Literacy Skills Test is made up of two subtests. The reading subtest contains only multiple-choice questions. The second subtest, the writing subtests is made up of three sections, a written composition, written summary and multiple-choice questions in grammar and mechanics
• The Adult Basic Education test is made up of open-response items and multiple-choice questions
