Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) Exam Study Guide & Test Preparation

The Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) is organized and administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). The exams are handled and held at Prometric computer based test centers.



Eligibility


   •  Candidates must be graduates of any accredited NBCOT recognized program in occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant
   •  Candidates who are yet to receive their degrees, but who have been "Cleared for Graduation" can also apply for COTA exam
   •  Candidates must complete fieldwork requirements

Exam Content


   •  Gather information and formulate conclusions regarding the client's needs and priorities to develop a client-centered intervention plan 33%
   •  Select and implement evidence-based interventions to support participation in areas of occupation (e.g., ADL, education, work, play, leisure, social participation) throughout the continuum of care 47%
   •  Uphold professional standards and responsibilities to promote quality in practice 20%



Exam Structure


The exams are computer based and consist of 200 multiple choice questions
The exam is timed for 4 hours



Other Information


   •  Candidates will receive pass/fail results immediately after the exam
   •  Detailed results will be mailed 4-6 weeks after the exam
   •  The results are scaled between 300-600 points
