IBEW Aptitude Test Overview

This test has been designed by the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) in partnership with the National Electrical Association (NECA). Their goal to standardize the quality of the electrical practitioners and apprentices entering the profession. This timed test is administered to candidates who want to be certified and licensed technicians and electricians.

Test Registration

Registration is a three-step process. You must complete each stage before proceeding to the next.  The three stages are:

  • File to qualify for the application.
  • Take Electrical Training Alliance Aptitude Test.
  • Undergo an in-person interview.

Registration requirements:

  • You must be at least 18.
  • Educational proof a yearly algebraic course with passing grades.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • High school transcript.

Fees

There are no fees required to take this test – only an application is needed.

Average Electrician salary in Canada:   $66,300
Entry level: starts at $55,470
Experienced Electricians: up to $81,491

Average Salary in United States:  $55,190

Test Format

The Electrician Aptitude Test  is a  computerized format test (CBT) that must be taken in an accredited test centers. The test is administered by the Local Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. Help with taking a computerized test

Questions are multiple choice – Help with multiple choice

You will receive the address of the test center closest to you after your application is accepted.

This is a timed test.  There are different times allotted for each section.  The total time to complete the test is two hours thirty minutes.

On Exam Day

Plan to arrive early at the test center.   You are required so show photo ID to enter the test center.

What’s on the test

The test contains two separate sections which cover both the technical and verbal parts. Candidates will be required to answer some basic arithmetic questions and then some comprehension questions for language efficiency purposes.

Algebra & Functions: Candidates will be given 46 minutes to answer the 33 questions which will be contained in this section. This algebra section will have topics which include:

  • Solving a linear equation of two variables.
  • Working with expressions like subtraction, multiplication, division and polynomial factoring.
  • Quadratic equations like square roots, quadratic formula, graphing and practical applications.

Reading Comprehension: Candidates will be given 51 minutes to answer 36 questions in this section. You are given short passages followed by questions.

To succeed on the test, you will need a basic understanding high school equations and algebra, and basic number operations.

You do not need to memorize formula, and no previous electrical work experience or knowledge is needed.

Calculators

There are no calculators allowed on this test. Candidates are not required to bring any calculators or any other similar device.

  • Finding specific information in a passage – the information may be stated directly or implied
  • Meaning of words from the context
  • Drawing conclusions from the information in the passage
