The Mental Key to Studying Effectively
Motivation. Defined as the desire for an individual to accomplish something, it is the key to success in studying, test preparation, school, and any goal that is waiting to be achieved in life. It is a mentality that causes an individual to trust the process towards attaining something. Without it, doing anything in life is nearly impossible. As if humans were blind and placed on the center of a compass, motivation is the guide towards a goal in a specific direction.
Studying is a skill that nearly anyone is capable of as long as the time is available. Studying effectively on the other hand, is very difficult and takes a lot more skill to master. It is more productive because it saves more time, integrates information better, and also initiates the strive to study again. The key to studying effectively is having motivation. Motivation is difficult to come by if a student is distracted by many outside disturbances. For example, if a student’s friend group is going to a movie together and the student has a difficult math exam the next day, it will be difficult to focus on studying at home, even if the student doesn’t go to the movie. If the individual had a strong sense of motivation to study for the exam, then he wouldn’t worry about feeling left out from the movie and he would study effectively, avoiding all distractions. The difficult part about studying effectively is actually having the motivation to do so.
The motivation to study can be achieved by multiple things. Firstly, it is important to want to score well on a test despite the amount of studying that is needed to do well. If a student has set a goal to do well on a test, it is most likely that the student will study and work hard prior to the test. Secondly, looking ahead at the great things that will come out of doing well on a test is essential. For example, if doing well on a specific test will raise a student’s grade to an A, which is needed to gain an overall GPA of 3.8 to get into a specific university, the student will have an immense amount of motivation if getting into that university means a lot to the student. On the other hand, if a student does not look ahead and sees no significance in doing well on a test because he or she does not care about the final grade report, there will be absolutely no motivation to study and do well on that test.
As a key to studying effectively and achieving academic goals, motivation truly differentiates a hardworking student from a lazy one. In life, motivation works in the same way as it does in studying. It works as a key to completing nearly any goal in life because it’s a mindset that causes people to want to work hard towards something. Without it, success in life is extremely difficult to accomplish.
